Dave Haslett is available for talks, workshops, seminars and literary festivals in the UK

Dave is the author of The Fastest Way to Write Your Book, and the founder of ideas4writers, the ideas and inspiration web site, and i4w2, the ethical publishing service. He has been writing for over twenty years and has extensive knowledge and experience of the writing and publishing industry - and he's always ready to share it with anyone who's willing to listen.

Dave is an experienced speaker who always gives fantastic value. He's often praised for his ability to see things from other people's perspectives, and puts things across in simple terms that everyone can understand. He strives to make each talk and workshop fun-packed as well as fact-packed, and there's always plenty of audience involvement.

"Dave really knows his stuff inside-out and makes everything seem so easy - which it is once he's shown you how to do it! We are all absolutely astounded at how much he managed to teach us. He's worth his weight in gold!"
Peter Stanley, South Devon

Talks and workshops are available on a variety of topics, and the length can be adjusted to suit individual needs. All talks and workshops include a question and answer session, and there will be an opportunity to talk to Dave about his books and buy signed copies.

Topics include:

  • Writing short stories (including how to win short story competitions)
This unique, highly interactive workshop covers all the main story writing topics, including characters, plots, setting, dialogue, description, structure, and much more. You'll also learn exactly what magazine editors are looking for, what turns them off, and how to win writing competitions.

Dave is an experienced competition judge and knows exactly what the judges are looking for, how to make your entry stand out, mistakes to avoid, and how the judging process works.

In conjunction with this workshop, Dave will be happy to run a short story competition amongst the members of your group, and will give feedback and commentary on the entries and why they succeeded or failed.

    (Workshop - 6 hours - 16 people)

  • Get your book published!
Thinking of writing a book? Partway through writing one? Finished it but keep getting rejected? Wondering whether self-publishing is right for you? This workshop takes you through all the options (mainstream, independent, and self-publishing) and looks at which would be the best fit for you and your book.

    You will learn:

    • how to find and approach mainstream and independent publishers that are suitable for you and your book
    • what you need to send and what you should (and shouldn't) say
    • how to write query letters, proposals and synopses that get results - you will actually write yours during the workshop under Dave's guidance
    • how to decide whether you need an agent, and how to get one if you do
    • exactly what publishers and agents are looking for
    • all about multi-book publishing deals
    • how to write a book marketing plan
    • how to guarantee that your book gets accepted, and what happens afterwards
    • how to publish your book yourself without it costing you a fortune - or find someone who will do it for you without ripping you off
    • how to sell lots of copies

This workshop consists of a series of talks, group discussions, and individual and group exercises. You will leave the workshop with all the materials you need to make a successful approach to publishers and agents, a detailed marketing plan, and a list of carefully targetted publishers, agents, self-publishing companies, printers, marketing companies and PR specialists - whatever is right for you and your book. Each person will also get a private 15-minute one-to-one session with Dave. (Workshop - 6 hours - 8 people).

  • Writing a novel (and how to get it published)
Details as above, but focused entirely on novels

  • Writing a non-fiction book (and how to get it published)
Details as above, but focused entirely on non-fiction books

  • Writing your life story (and how to get it published)
Details as above, but focused entirely on biographies, autobiographies, and books based on incidents from your own life

  • Self-publishing workshop
High quality on a budget, no previous experience necessary. A complete walk-through of the entire process - what you need, where to get it, how to use it, procedures to follow, inside secrets, how to avoid being ripped-off, and the best alternatives if you'd rather let someone else do all the work. (Workshop - full day - 8 to 10 people)

  • Book marketing masterclass
For published or self-published authors. Don't expect your publisher to sell your books for you; unless you're a big name author they leave all that to you these days. Fortunately you can boost your sales enormously with very little effort and a bit of know-how - which this masterclass will give you.
(Workshop - half day or full day - 16 to 20 people)

  • How to create great ideas
And what to do with them when you have them.
(Talk or workshop - 1 to 3 hours - at least 15 people)

  • The fastest way to write your book
Why I wrote it, how I wrote it, how you can do the same, speed-writing tips and tricks, highlights from selected chapters, plus a thrilling live demonstration of some of the concepts in action - just to prove that it really works!
(Talk - 1 to 2 hours, any number of people)

  • The internet - a writer's guide
Why every writer needs it, how to use it, what's on it, how to find things easily, how to write for the internet, how to sell your work online. Includes a guided tour of some of the best web sites and tools for writers. (Please note: the venue will require a phone line for internet connection.)
(Talk and live demonstration - about 2 hours - 15 to 20 people)

  • Mix-n-match
Dave is very flexible and can give talks and workshops that combine elements from any of the above topics. Just tell him what you need.

Please note that Dave requires at least 3 months' notice prior to giving a talk.

If you don't have enough interest for a talk or workshop within your own group, you could open your event up to a wider audience, perhaps by getting it mentioned in a local newspaper or putting up a few posters in the library and around the town (we can supply the posters). Some of the people who come to the talk or workshop might also be interested in joining your group, so it's a great way of recruiting new members.

While he's in your area, Dave can also give short talks and hold book signing sessions in bookshops and libraries if they're interested.
