Five novels I've edited have won international awards

I have nearly 30 years' writing and editing experience, and I'm friendly, flexible and full of ideas. As well as all the usual editing services I can help you develop your idea into an outline, fill holes in your plot or structure, or even help you develop and edit your book scene by scene or chapter by chapter rather than editing the whole thing at once. If English is not your first language I can make your book read as if it was written by a native English speaker.

Genres

Fiction

Most adult and children's fiction of any length, including general and literary works, fantasy, paranormal, crime, mysteries, thrillers, light science fiction and space operas, comedies and erotica.

I'm less keen on war stories, westerns, horror, romance or hard science fiction, cyberpunk, etc, but if they only need copy editing or proofreading I'm happy to work on them. I can't offer line or developmental edits for those though.

Non-fiction

No academic, legal or medical texts, but everything else should be fine.

Rates

Proofreading: £2 per 1,000 words
Examples: 40,000 words = £80    80,000 words (average novel length) = £160
(The last check for minor errors before your book is published – no major changes.)

Copy editing: £3 per 1,000 words
Examples: 40,000 words = £120    80,000 words = £240
(Checking and correcting spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax, consistency and factual accuracy.)

Line editing: £4 per 1,000 words
Examples: 40,000 words = £160    80,000 words = £320
(General editing; suggested improvements; addressing any issues with your writing style; fixing sentence and paragraph structure; checking for clarity, meaning, use of language, plausibility, etc.)

Second-pass editing: £3 per 1,000 words
Examples: 40,000 words = £120    80,000 words = £240
(After you've made the changes I suggested during the line edit, I can go through your manuscript for a second time to check that you've applied them correctly.)

Developmental work: £35 per hour
(I'll help you turn your idea into an outline, then help you create your book around it scene by scene or chapter by chapter, suggesting improvements as you go and editing each part as it is completed.)

Formats

I can work with whatever technology you prefer to use
e.g. Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, Libre Office, Google Docs, Scrivener, Pages, rich text or plain text, or even good old printed paper.

It would help if the software you use has a feature for tracking and approving changes and adding comments.
Word, OpenOffice, Libre Office, Google Docs, Scrivener and Pages can all do this.

Testimonials

"I found Dave to be a super responsive and professional editor who helped me out at very short notice. He provided an excellent edit which released up the true meaning and improved the readability of several sections in my manuscript. I have no hesitation in recommending him."
