Sample idea:
Every character should have the potential to conflict with every
other character. It doesn't necessarily mean that it'll happen,
just that the potential is there. They might be best friends -
for now. They might be lovers - for now. But one thing can easily
lead to another and they could be at war with each other before
you know it. Or not. It's the potential that's the important bit.
It keeps the reader in suspense. Will they remain friends or lovers
for the whole story? Or will their friendship be blown apart in
an explosion of long-held grudges and accusations? Let the reader
know, even if only subtly, that there's a potential conflict bubbling
under the surface. It's entirely up to you when and if you use
it. What would the conflict be about? For each character make
a list of their backgrounds and opinions. Mention things like
race, politics, religion, social class, money, job, and so on.
Then for each pair of characters find an area where there is a
significant difference. This is where the conflict is most likely
to occur. Make a note of it and think about the possibilities
before moving on to consider the next pair. Repeat this process
until you've found an area of potential conflict between every
character.
