Have you noticed that when the police investigate a murder the
newspapers often print a lot of details about the victim's past?
That means the police - and journalists - have been investigating
the victim as well as the villain. Hopefully something in the
victim's past will lead them to the killer, since in many cases
the victim knew their killer. But if there's something in the
victim's past that's worth printing in newspapers (and there usually
is!) then it's probably because the victim isn't quite the innocent
person they first appeared to be. Not only are they not so innocent
themselves, but they'll probably have a few dodgy connections
with some of the other main suspects in the case. The whole case
becomes linked together by multiple threads that all intersect
with each other. That makes for an intriguing story that really
captures the reader's interest.
