You can keep the tension going in a scene by not letting either party give a direct answer to a question. If you actually want to get it over with quickly, get the detective to ask the suspect: 'Did you kill Mavis Bean?' and get the suspect to say: 'Yes'. But it's more likely that you'll want to extend the tension for as long as possible. So the suspect won't say 'Yes'. In fact he probably won't answer the question at all. In this case the suspect would probably say something like: 'Are you arresting me?' Or 'Are you saying that I did?' Or 'Are you nuts? I'm her father for Christ's sake!' This keeps the reader guessing.
