One of the main reasons why mainstream publishers turn books
down is that they don't think they can sell enough copies. But
how about if you combine traditional publishing and self-publishing
by offering to buy say 500 or 1,000 books from them at cost price.
That should make them sit up and take notice. Your book will still
have to be of publishable quality of course. And you'll have to
be reasonably certain that you can sell that many copies yourself.
The benefits are huge: the credibility of a recognised publisher,
professional editing and design, marketing, national distribution,
and so on. With a recognised publisher you're more likely to get
your book reviewed in the media too. If the book does well you'll
still receive the usual royalties from your publisher. But you
should make an even bigger percentage on the ones you sell yourself
- provided you can sell them. Even if you barely break even on
those you sell yourself it might still be worth doing it this
way - you got your book published after all!
