The feeling of tension before the start of a major event can have a big impact on everyone. It's often a time of anxiety and everyone's feeling the strain. Nerves are rattling, tempers are barely restrained. There are plenty of stories about life during wartime or during a revolution. But what was life like in the weeks and days leading up to it. And what about other events - great exhibitions, public announcements, political upheavals, and major changes affecting ordinary people - and don't forget the people directly involved with the event whose lengthy preparations and perhaps a lifetime of devotion might come to nothing if it all goes horribly wrong. While the event itself might make a good subject for a novel, the period leading up to it could make a great short story or first chapter.
