A recent BBC TV series looked at human parasites. This is definitely
the stuff of horror stories! Many viewers will have been unable
to watch it. You can use this to add even more horrific elements
to your horror story. Imagine that our hero has been kidnapped.
His fellow prisoners are infested with worms and other nasty things
that eat away at them from the inside, make them vomit blood,
block up their blood vessels and lymph glands and make them swell
up. Yuk! Now imagine our hero's frantic attempts to avoid the
same thing happening to him. He examines every mouthful of food
for worm eggs that his captors are lacing his meals with. He filters
his drinks through his socks because they contains worm eggs too.
Of course some parasites are too small to be seen. He can't avoid
everything. Imagine his horror when he finds that he's missed
an egg and there's something growing inside him. There's no chance
of getting hold of medicine while he's locked up. And when he's
as scared as this, being threatened with - or bitten by - a poisonous
snake might come as a blessing. At least he'll have a quick death
rather than a slow one. That might give him the extra sense of
bravado he needs to allow him to overcome his captors and escape.
Now he needs to get medical treatment fast. But that means going
through the haunted forest alone... Perhaps that's what brought
him and his colleagues here in the first place. What happened
to them? And what will happen to him? Will the parasites remain
in his body forever as a constant reminder of the horror he suffered?
