Sample idea:
A great way to come up with the plot of a mystery story is simply
to think of a bizarre cause and effect. The two things would never
usually go together, so why the heck did it happen this way? For
example: a man learns that an experimental drug has cured his
terminal illness. He goes to a racing circuit, books himself a
session in a twin-seater racing car, shoots the driver dead, then
sets off up the motorway at unheard of speeds. Eventually he loses
control and crashes, killing himself. Why? It's a mystery all
right! Your job is to come up with a suitable explanation. That's
your story. Another example: a writer who has received a hundred
rejection slips finally gets an acceptance letter. He stabs himself
to death with his letter-opener. Why? Feel free to use those examples,
or see how many of your own you can come up with. It's vital that
the explanation is completely plausible - although unravelling
it won't be easy.
