Sample idea:
The end of a novel is very important. The feeling that you leave
the reader with will stay with them. If you're having trouble
with the ending of your novel, here's an idea that will at least
ensure that the ending is a decent one. You might come up with
a better ending when you revise and rewrite, but this should do
for now. After the big climax, have your hero look back over the
story and all that has happened. This should take no more than
a paragraph or two. Then he can simply list the things that happened
afterwards. Which characters died or went to jail. Which characters
were rewarded. Which characters paired off and lived happily ever
after, and so on. This nicely tidies up all the loose ends and
leaves the reader with a warm glow as they recall the whole story
and it's satisfying conclusion. Lastly, the hero briefly tells
us what became of him... and the novel ends. It's a simple ending,
but very effective. As a reader it tells me everything I want
to know, so I'm happy. If, at the very end, the hero reveals that
what has happened to him is slightly surprising then so much the
better.
