When adapting a novel for the stage or screen there's a trick
that we can borrow from Hollywood. That trick is not to read the
novel but to get someone else to read it for you. They should
then tell you the outline of the story from what they can remember.
If you've already read the book then you could still do this -
or simply write down what you can remember of the story yourself.
This method leaves out the boring bits and unnecessary background
details and keeps the important bits of the action. With what
remains of the basic outline written down you can now go back
and read the book and add in the details and dialogue. You may
find that the details of the story have changed a little in the
process. That's part of the fun. Bare in mind that your adaptation
will attract criticism from purists who think it should be an
exact copy of the novel. Since there's no way that it can be an
exact copy, every adaptation is criticised for this. You just
have to try not to offend too many of them.
