Market research can provide valuable information to self-publishers.
Before you even write a word, visit some of the people and places
where you hope your book will be sold and ask them their opinion.
Do they think your book will do well? How many copies do they
think they could sell? Would they be willing to stock it? Show
them a brief outline of the book. Do they think it covers the
subject fully, or can they suggest improvements, changes, local
people with a good knowledge of the subject who would be worth
speaking to? How about getting them to choose the best cover design
from a number of possibilities? You don't have to take their advice,
but if several people say the same thing you really ought to consider
what they're telling you, even if it isn't quite what you'd originally
planned. Also ask your local newspaper, radio station and regional
TV company if they'd be willing to review your book or do a feature
about you - try offering a few free copies for competition prizes,
that usually gets their attention. All this information will give
you a rough guide as to how successful your book is likely to
be. If you decide to proceed with it you'll have a good idea of
how many copies you'll need to get printed.
