To help you get the appearance of rooms right how about using
a floor plan or 3D house designer program for your computer? These
can be quite inexpensive and very useful for designing new colour
schemes and DIY projects for your real house as well as fictional
ones. A good example is Real Homes Magazine 3D Designer. You can
find this at Dream Direct (www.edream.co.uk)
for £29.99. Once your floor plan is set up you can click
any wall to change its colour scheme or add wallpaper. Drag and
drop furniture to add it and move it around. When you've finished,
the whole room - or whole building if you've done several connected
rooms - is brought to life on screen in realistic 3D and you can
walk around it as if you were really there. This really does allow
you to get your settings exactly right, and allows you to visualise
your story taking place there. To create a set of rooms from scratch
can take quite a while to do, so you might not want to consider
it for a single short story. But for a series of stories or a
novel it would certainly be worthwhile spending some time on.
These programs are very easy to use and also allow you to view
the setting in different lighting conditions, so you can alter
the mood and atmosphere in seconds.
