Sample idea: Foreign markets the easy way

How can you sell your book in foreign markets when you're a self-publisher? You won't know who any of the agents or overseas publishers are. You won't have any way of accessing the market, even if your book was published there. And in many cases you won't even speak the language. Even so, if you pick the right subject, it can be very lucrative. Here's my solution:

First, choose a country - there's no reason why your book couldn't be published in a hundred or more countries eventually, but you'll probably want to start with the ones with the biggest market for your subject.

Go online and start searching for a writer or expert in that country who writes about the same subject, or a closely related one. If it's a non-English-speaking country, you'll need to find a writer who also speaks reasonable English.

Look for websites and discussion forums which cover that subject in that particular country or language. Don't worry if the website isn't in English - there are free translation services which will translate it for you - or at least give you a close enough approximation that you'll be able to get the gist of it. Google Translate is a good example.

Now compose a message to post on that website or forum. In this message you'll mention that you've already published your book in English in your own country. Ask for a local writer/publisher who knows that subject to contact you with a view to translating your book and publishing and selling it in his own country. You can use the same translation service as before to translate your message into their language. Don't worry that your translation might not be perfect.

Don't offer to pay the writer/publisher/translator - instead you want to involve him as a business partner. He'll translate your book and get it published (or self-publish it) in his country, and he'll be responsible for marketing and selling it there. In return he'll split the profits with you - you'll have to agree the actual percentage with him.

The perfect business parner will be well-known to the other members of the online community in that country and will know the subject well. He might also have published books or articles under his own name - you need to make sure you're dealing with someone trustworthy and genuine who will do a professional job and send you your share of the money. Ask for copies or clippings of his work if there's any doubt about his credibility.

You can repeat this same process as many times as you like for other countries. Just find a suitable website, post a message in their language that describes the project, and wait to see if you get any responses. If not, try a different website, or post the message again after a month or so.

If it all works out well, within a few months you should find money arriving on a regular basis from all over the world. Repeat the process for your next book!
